Tzaneen, currently the second largest town in the Limpopo Province was established in 1919. The name have a number of explanations – some say that it is derived from batsanene, meaning people of small villages, however the most common explanation is that it is of Sotho origin and means “place where people gathered”. Tzaneen is surrounded by low hills that slope up to the towering peaks of the Northern Drakensberg. It is renowned for its beautiful trees and tropical gardens of abundant growth – fed by the high rainfall and warm lowveld temperatures. Most of the outer residents of Tzaneen are farmers and are supported by the strong economical growth of businesses within the town centre. The area is home to an incredible variety of plants and ferns, as well as some of South Africa’s most beautiful indigenous forests and grasslands.
